The 26th Annual Classic Boat Show is this Saturday, August 22nd at B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que (350 Alden Road in Big Bear Lake) from 10 am to 4 pm.  You can contact Charlie Brewster from Nottingham’s (909-866-4644) or B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que (909-866-5400) for more information.  It’s free, the weather should be nice, and there should be some impressive boats on display.

Wooden Boats on the Water

A day on the lake wouldn’t be complete without attending the 26th annual Classic Boat Show Saturday, Aug. 22, at B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que in Big Bear Lake.

The public is encouraged to view these aquatic masterpieces from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the Southern California Antique and Classic Boat Show Society event is free.

Though some of the 30 or more featured boats are made of fiberglass, a majority are made of wood. The most notable brand names include Century, Hacker, Gar Wood and the highly coveted Chris Craft.

Chris Crafts are beauties from another age. Their mahogany hulls shine like golden honey, and it almost seems as if Stradivari himself took a hiatus from violins to handcraft these entrancing boats.

The true master craftsman was Christopher Columbus Smith, who first started handcrafting boats around 1884. According to Chris Craft’s Web site, Smith is credited as one of the founding fathers of powerboats. His first motorboats traveled at 7 miles per hour, a speed unheard of at the time. Between 1914 and 1921, Smith’s boats won gold at the American Powerboats Association’s Gold Cup.

Smith is also credited as being one of the first to standardize his design for quality and mass production. The last fully wooden Chris Craft ever made was in 1972.

The boat show kicks off with a poker run around the lake on Friday, Aug. 21, open to show participants only. Participants putt around to different docks on the lake and collect poker hands in a friendly competition.

Before the viewing at B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que on Saturday, the vintage boats partake in a ride around the lake for a photo shoot around 8:30 a.m. A photographer will be flying high in a parasail to capture snapshots of the classic boat caravan.
